This is by far my favourite go-to drink for winter. Often used as a digestive, ginger is an excellent stimulant and helps to tone a sluggish liver and digestive system. Turmeric, with it's active compound curcumin, is a most powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
Raw honey, apart from tasting delicious, is also a great source of antioxidants and offers important antiviral and antibacterial properties for this time of year. While lemon lightens the earthy root herbs and provides Vitamin C.
makes 1 litre
4 cups filtered water
3" turmeric root, peeled and sliced
3" ginger root, peeled and sliced
fresh ground black pepper
1-2t raw honey
juice of 1 lemon
While bringing water to a boil in a small saucepan, peel and cut ginger and turmeric into thin slices lengthwise. Add turmeric and ginger to the boiling water and reduce to simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. This will extract the beneficial compounds from the turmeric and ginger.
Remove the pot from the stove.
Strain the tea into a cup through a fine-mesh strainer to filter out the particles of turmeric and ginger.
Add a few turns of the peppermill, honey and lemon to taste.
Serve warm or store in refrigerator in a glass bottle, and enjoy cold later.
